Yes, you read that right.
horsemen of the apocalypse candidates for Lieutenant Governor in Texas think that you can’t be dead until you are not pregnant and dead.
According to the Star-Telegram when the four candidates for Lieutenant Governor were asked about the Muñoz case, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, state Sen. Dan Patrick of Houston, Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson and Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples, all said the judge shouldn’t have allowed Ms. Muñoz’s body to be removed from life support.
Dewhurst’s comments: “I’m a strong believer of the sanctity of life. … This baby could have been born. If I had been in that judge’s shoes, I would have ruled differently.”
Staples: “I do believe the court erred in this situation.”
Patrick: “There is nothing more precious than the life of a baby in the womb. … We are born in the image of God. Whenever we have the opportunity to preserve life, we should.
And Patterson? “We should always err on the side of life,” and, “I think we have to change the law,” and “We have conflicting statutes.” That last statement actually shows he ignorance or disregard of the no-DNR statute that the hospital erroneously applied to Ms. Muñoz body. When it was written it was not to invalidate any pre-existing legislation, such as the definition of death.
Either the four candidates for Lieutenant Governor haven’t taken the time to avail themselves of the facts of the case (that brain death is death) or they want the bodies of dead women to be defiled in some sort of Frankensteinian horror.
This is beyond disgusting, it’s terrifying.
