Texas Lieutenant Governor candidates think brain death shouldn’t apply in pregnancy

Yes, you read that right.

The four horsemen of the apocalypse candidates for Lieutenant Governor in Texas think that you can’t be dead until you are not pregnant and dead.

According to the Star-Telegram when the four candidates for Lieutenant Governor were asked about the Muñoz case, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, state Sen. Dan Patrick of Houston, Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson and Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples, all said the judge shouldn’t have allowed Ms. Muñoz’s body to be removed from life support.

Dewhurst’s comments: “I’m a strong believer of the sanctity of life. … This baby could have been born. If I had been in that judge’s shoes, I would have ruled differently.”

Staples: “I do believe the court erred in this situation.”

Patrick: “There is nothing more precious than the life of a baby in the womb. … We are born in the image of God. Whenever we have the opportunity to preserve life, we should.

And Patterson? “We should always err on the side of life,” and, “I think we have to change the law,” and “We have conflicting statutes.” That last statement actually shows he ignorance or disregard of the no-DNR statute that the hospital erroneously applied to Ms. Muñoz body. When it was written it was not to invalidate any pre-existing legislation, such as the definition of death.

Either the four candidates for Lieutenant Governor haven’t taken the time to avail themselves of the facts of the case (that brain death is death) or they want the bodies of dead women to be defiled in some sort of Frankensteinian horror.

This is beyond disgusting, it’s terrifying.

  1. This is beyond disgusting, it’s terrifying.

It is. The triumph of religion over common sense and humanity.

  2. The fetus was not viable because of the SEVERE lack of oxygen that killed this poor woman.

They were warned that this would be the case.

Most importantly, the hospital REFUSED to admit this woman was pronounced brain dead, their spokesperson REFUSED to discuss it at their press conference…and THAT is how they skirted the existing law, in order to promote their “fetal rights” agenda.

If they had admitted she was brain dead, that means legally dead and they would not have been able to keep her corpse on life support.

They constantly referred to her as a “patient” , which she was not, from the time she was pronounced brain dead.

They abused this family beyond belief!

It is as illegal, as it is grotesque to strip away her rights and her families rights in order to promote their RELIGIOUS, POLITICAL agenda.

The family ought to be able to sue them for $ millions, for the HORROR they were put through.

“The Associated Press reported that, according to attorneys Jessica Janicek and Heather King, Marlise Muñoz’s fetus has suffered fluid buildup in its skull and deformed “lower extremities,” as well as an undetermined heart condition.

“Quite sadly, this information is not surprising due to the fact that the fetus, after being deprived of oxygen for an indeterminate length of time, is gestating within a dead and deteriorating body, as a horrified family looks on in absolute anguish, distress and sadness,” the statement read.”

The four candidates for Lieutenant Governor in Texas do not have a CLUE about the law in their own state, AND they IGNORED the state of the fetus….it wasn’t viable no matter HOW long this travesty were to continue.

ALL of them disqualified themselves with their moronic statements.

    1. Although I believe the family should have been allowed to withdraw Mrs. Munoz from life support in November, no one knows if the fetus would it have been viable had it gone to term. It was not viable at the point she was taken off life support as the pregnancy was not far enough along – something both sides agreed upon. Also, the hospital did acknowledge Mrs. Munoz was brain dead, but was not applying the law properly. Sad case. Families should be able to make these decisions, not the government or hospitals.

      1. The foetus could not have made it to term though. If you think it could then you’re ignoring the basic biological facts of life. You cannot gestate a foetus inside a corpse.

Women are not just ambulatory uterine cavities. Foetuses don’t just magically appear and grow, they are built bit-by-bit from the body of their mother. They leach minerals and nutrients from her bones, her teeth and her blood. They feed on whatever she does, her blood circulates inside them providing both nourishment and oxygen. Blood that is constantly created, filtered and maintained by the woman’s circulatory system.

Guess what? Corpses can’t do any of that. The body is dead, it is breaking down, and simply pumping oxygen in won’t help.

Foetuses can’t be grown or nourished by dead women. Women in a PVS? Sure. Women who should be allowed to RIP? Not a chance. New cells aren’t being made, nothing’s being repaired or replenished .

The childlike GOPthink that believes that Jebus makes babies magically grow and that all they need is a uterus with a blood supply is bizarre. The fact that would-be politicians anywhere but the Republic of Gilead actually think like this is horrific.

  3. The GOP is so radical down there that going against the party line would likely doom their chances of election. Thus we can’t be sure those guys were actually telling the truth about their position.

We still shouldn’t vote for them, though.

  4. Oh, yes, by all means, let’s “preserve life”…unless it is a hungry OLDER non-fetal child, or a woman, or a poverty-stricken young adult going to war for pay and three meals a day. Hypocritical asshats.

    1. This. If the foetus had survived to term and had suffered the inevitable effects of oxygen deprivation and of drawing life support, nutrition and. the basic building blocks of its mind and body from a deteriorating corpse, the GOP would have been first in line to deny it medical or social assistance. GOP automatons only care about foetuses, not the babies that they become.

  5. I will point out that these statements were made by the Republican candidates for Lieutenant Governor. The blog post is not clear about this important fact.

  6. Please do not insult doctor Frankenstein by comparing his work and mistakes to the demented gibberish these 4 idiots said either from genuine conviction or because they want to be elected by the GOP voters.

  7. So, having kept a corpse in the hospital for weeks, what do you bet that the insurance company denied payment, on the not unreasonable grounds that providing medical care to a corpse is not a covered expense, that the hospital sent a bill to the widower?

    1. My thoughts exactly.

The whole situation is one giant fuck-up caused by letting religion leak into reality. God has no place in a hospital. Hospitals are about medicine and science, they’re there to save lives. If someone wants to save souls instead then they should seek employment in a church.
